Email Scam ALERT: Legal Solicitations

In January 2010, Tri-Power Design, LLC was contacted by numerous law firms, located both domestically and internationally, who had received emails from an email address purportedly originating from our company (e.g., "enquires@tripower.net).  These emails, however, were not sent from Tri-Power or any of its employees and the "enquires@tripower.net, tripowerdesign@aol.com" addresses or AOL variants does not exist as a legitamate company email addresses.  Instead, these fraudulent emails were created and sent by an unknown imposter to law firms as part of a scam.  In this scam, the imposter poses as a potential client (TriPower) seeking legal respresentation to collect a large debt.  After the law firm is retained, this phony debt is almost immediately paid to the law firm's trust account with a forged bank order or forged certified check.  The fake "client" then pressures the law firm for payment out of the lawyer's trust account (after deducting a generous allowance for legal fees) before the forgery is discovered and after the trust check has cleared.

Tri-Power Design’s IT department is actively working with IT professionals and federal and local authorities to mitigate this situation.  Fortunately, many law firms are already familiary with this type of scam.  Legal forums have also published reports to make firms aware of this type of scam and noted that more and more businesses have encountered this type of attempted fraud.

If you have received one of these types of emails, please immediately forward it to tripower.alert@gmail.com with your contact information.  Please also inform other members of the legal community about this type scam, know asa "Joe-Job," as it has affected numerous other companies as well.

-Thank You
